Road trip to South Dakota ~ Part 2

Finally a part 2!
We got to the Badlands and went to the Door and Window Trails.

This is the Door Trail. It’s definitely the better of the two trails. You can get off trail and walk on the rocks but be careful, you can still fall and break your neck.

It really was an out of this world experience.

M conquered the Badlands!

Mike and M pretending to be on Vulcan

We kept driving through the badlands

And saw critters!

This was on the Window Trail, a squirrel.

Prairie Dogs

Apparently they are having a meeting

Badland Deers

Mountain Goats

And bison!! We were about to leave the Badlands, we were 5 miles from the highway and spotted the herd!

Mount Rushmore is next!!

Road trip to South Dakota ~ Part 1

We went on an awesome 3 day road trip to the Badlands and Mt Rushmore.

We had to drive through Kansas and Nebraska before going to South Dakota. Both have beautiful prairies and enough cows to play an awesome game of “Vache” (means cow in French). The object of the game was to spot cows and the one who spotted the most herds won. Of course, after several years, the rules became precise. Herds had to be divided by a fence or in a huge pasture. Herds behind us didn’t count.

This is Nebraska on our way home:

This is the prairie before we got to the Badlands. Look at that sky!

We went up near Yankton, SD, to find the Ptaks National Cemetery. Mike’s Great Great Great Grandfather, Jan Wampol is buried there. There are other family members but we need to figure out who they are exactly first. His family came from Czechoslovakia.

On the way to the Badlands, we stopped to look at a dam and they had this huge tepee.

Do you ever wonder what houses/barns like this used to be? Who lived there? What happened? Why is no one there anymore?

We saw this car on the way to the Badlands

From Yankton, we went West towards the Badlands.

To be continued!

Blooms!

Well I am happy to see and smell these!! Sure changes from what I smell at work (and probably what I smell like after work…)

(Don’t mind the weeds, we haven’t gotten there yet)

They are starting to bloom, before anyone else in the neighborhood. That’s odd because normally, mine bloom later since they face North. I will have better pictures of them when they hold their little heads a little higher!

Michaela’s Room Makeover ~ Part 1.2

Well I had intentions of removing what little carpet was left in her room: in the closet, under her dresser, the shelves and her entertainment stand. That didn’t happen.

I took everything out of her closet and took that carpet out. Then I had to remove the tacks from the perimeter of most of the room, because I hadn’t done it yet.

So while we were at it, I decided to sort through her closet stuff. Needless to say, it took a few hours and I’m done for tonight.

I’m very proud of the fact that she let go of a few things easily but not enough in my eyes (do they ever?). We will transitions some items to the garage for now. Good alternative to keeping in her room (for me) and good alternative to throwing (for her). We have a bag to toss and a bag for donation.

So first, the floor. I have shared this kind of photo before but we ripped up the carpet and there are still tiles under the tacks. Why?? Stupid house flippers! The only thing holding those tiles down are the nails from the tacks so it’s not like they are glued and won’t come up. I just don’t understand and it baffles me every time I have pulled carpet up in this house. We have only 2 rooms left with carpet and I am sure we will find the same thing under that carpet.

We’ve always had these tubs to separate her things. How does so much stuff come out of that small closet? We’re not even showing you what’s on the shelf whose existence was not acknowledged today (mostly board games anyways).

So this is M’s closet now. I’m not sure if we are going to keep those tubs, they are handy but an eyesore. The trash bags are stuffed animals.

Look!! Empty drawers! A few of them are almost empty so I’m a happy Momma!

One cool/weird thing we did find was this playdough. I don’t know if you can tell but it looks like the top has crystals on it. I’ve never seen anything like it.

So why am I showing you all this even though it’s a small step? It’s not like I did the whole room in 2 days or anything. Part of it is that I can only do little bits at a time. Another part is that, if I can do it and accomplish my goals with this house, no matter how slow, anyone can do it! It may be 10 years before I get everything done but hey!

Class Picture Day – 2012

Last week was picture day at M’s school. It was class picture time.

She let me do her hair! I love doing her hair but she doesn’t like the pulling and tightening etc.

So here she is in an outfit of her choice and her hair done. It’s hard to tell, obviously, from the front but her hair is twirled into a bun. It was supposed to look like a rose but I’m not sure I succeeded. If you have a little girl and love doing hairstyles, visit The Story of a Princess and Her Hair.

Project – Closet – Part 1

Phase 1 of getting a new closet is cleaning the old one out. Now while I won’t be building for a while, I needed to clean out my closet. You’ll see why.

Normally, I would never ever post a before picture but since I have an after picture, why not.

This is the closet in my room, small. I put the drawers in there because with a king size bed, there was no other place to put it, seriously. Can’t get anything because everything falls all over the place.

The drawers were breaking so I removed the middle one which was completely broken and left the others. We still have some things that will move (the boxes) but after 2 big trash bags going to charity and a small one going to the trash, we have:

YAY!!! So glad to have a closet I can use right now. But whenever I build my built ins, that will be a sight. I have it designed, just need to buy the lumber and do it!

The weeds will be here a while longer until the great spring cleanup :)
