Wishing to encourage her young son's progress at the piano, a Mom bought tickets to a piano recital given by the famed Paterewski. They arrived in time to claim their seats in the second row. The young boy stared in wide-eyed wonder at the majestic concert grand piano on the stage. The Mom began talking to a nearby friend and failed to notice her son slipping away and heading for the piano on stage. The house lights began to dim...the spotlights hit the piano only to find the little boy at the piano bench, innocently picking out Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Before the woman could have presence of mind to retrieve her son, the famous Paterewski appeared on stage and quickly moved to the keyboard. "Don't quit! Keep playing", he whispered to the boy. Leaning over, he reached down with his left hand and began filling in a marvelous lower keyboard accompaniment. With his right hand, he reached around the other side, encircling the child, and added a running obligato. Together, the old master and the young novice mesmerized the crowd.
No matter how insignificant you may feel today, The Master has these words for you: Don't quit...keep on playing. I'll add whatever is needed to turn your efforts into a masterpiece. Believe me and be satisfied.
